Services

Our approach

Our services support and educate clients during and after cancer treatments. We offer a personalized approach which includes integrative oncology, nutrition, and lifestyle medicine.  This can be tailored to your needs from either short terms consultations to longer term programs.

The following are some suggestions of how we can work together, whether in person (Northern California), virtually by an HIPAA compliant video conference (similar to Skype/Facebook), or by phone.

Please note, the legislature in certain US states restricts me from working ‘virtually’ on nutrition with clients who live in those states.  We can still work together on other aspects of cancer care, however, such as stress reduction, well-being, psycho-oncology, mind-body medicine, exercise, and lifestyle medicine.  I will confirm any restrictions with you before we begin working together.

Pay-per-session consultations

The pay-per-session options are designed to give you flexibility in how we work together.  They empower you to move forward to make decisions that will help you get through diagnosis and treatment.

Hotline phone call or email

A quick call or email response for those urgent questions that are worrying and won’t go away. FREE – no cost, no obligation.

Clinical consultations

Our clinical consultations are 60 minutes with Ruth with optional 30, 45 or 60 minute follow-up. $195/hr. See below for further information.

Food coaching

Food coaching with Kathie.  30,45 or 60 minute options. $95/hr. See below for further information.

1. Hotline call or email with Ruth

Having a cancer diagnosis can be a very scary time. If you have an urgent question that you are worrying about or something that you feel awkward asking your oncologist, you can give Ruth a call or email. No charge. No obligation.

Just use the “contact us” page on the website and include “hotline” in the subject line. If you want me to give you a call rather than email response, please provide contact information and a few time options.  Please don’t use the scheduler link below.

2. Clinical consultations

Our clinical consultations provide clients with 60-minute initial consultations followed by optional 30, 45, or 60-minute follow-up visits. These consultations can be in person (Northern California) or by phone, or by Facetime.

Who are these consultations suitable for?

These sessions can be used in a few different ways:

  • These pay-per-session options tend to be a good place to start for those newly diagnosed with cancer or in treatment. With that new diagnosis, having a long-term program may be overwhelming on top of the busy schedule of conventional treatments of surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy so, often a couple of individual consultations to answer specific questions may be more appropriate.
  • These consultations may also be helpful for those with a recurrence or metastatic cancer to explore their options.
  • Alternatively, you can use these sessions as a  “get to know you” option, if you are thinking about doing one of our longer term programs but are unsure of what to expect (see below * for the special pricing option for this). You can also have an initial session plus several follow-up sessions to work on something if you aren’t ready to do a full program.
  • Although we specialize in cancer, we also do work with clients with other health issues.  If you are interested in us working together with something other than cancer, use the “contact us” page and let us know briefly what is going on. If it is an area where we feel you would be better served by someone else, we will tell you straight away.  Otherwise, we are happy to have an individual session or create a program for you.

What can you cover in these consultations?

Examples of the focus of these sessions include, but are not limited to:

  • explanation of your diagnosis/cancer in easy to understand language
  • questions for you to ask your oncologist so that you can make informed decisions
  • decision making – we can talk through the options
  • treatment options  –  we can discuss both conventional and supportive treatments and how they work together
  • referrals to oncologists, second opinions, facilities and clinics and other healthcare providers
  • extra testing options to consider (e.g. Oncotype Dx, genomic testing, biomarkers)
  • translating the scientific studies so you can understand them and how they apply to you
  • clinical trial considerations

Alternatively, these sessions can be used to discuss nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle interventions that can improve outcomes of conventional cancer treatments, and can reduce side effects of treatments.  This is a key part of integrative oncology and should be part of everyone’s cancer treatment program.  Careful consideration is given to drug interactions.

Examples of topics covered include:

  • What to eat when you don’t feel like eating
  • How to eat when you have side effects such as a sore mouth, diarrhea, etc.
  • Foods to reduce side effects and nutrient depletions
  • Supplements – to reduce side effects and improve the outcome of chemotherapy treatments
  • Nutrition and lifestyle medicine to prepare for surgery
  • Lifestyle medicine approaches including exercise, sleep, stress reduction, guided imagery to improve quality of life during treatment, outcome, and side effects
  • Analysis of potential nutrient depletions due to chemotherapy and other medications

How much does it cost?

The price for an initial 60-minute consultation with Ruth, which includes a report covering what we discuss, is $195.

Follow-up sessions are charged at $90 for 30 minutes and $135 for 45 minutes and $180 for 60 minutes.

*If you book a 60-minute consultation and then proceed onto one of our longer term programs, the price for your 60-minute consultation will be reduced to $95.

When your consultation is being scheduled using our online scheduler, you have the option to enter your credit card onto the secure system. We can then use this card for charges for the appointment(s). This is shown clearly on the scheduler and accompanying app. If we are meeting in person and you prefer not to use a credit card, we will send an invoice through the scheduler and you can pay by check/cheque.  We appreciate prompt payment within 7 days of your consultation.

  • tips for minimizing the effort involved in changing your diet

Longer term programs

The longer term programs represent a commitment for both you and Ruth. This type of approach isn’t about quick fixes, but rather about making sustainable changes and improvements.

In between your consultations, Ruth spends considerable time researching the best approach for you. These are personalized programs and different for everyone. The goal of these programs is to manage your symptoms, identify and address your risks and determine your root cause and drivers of cancer or other illness, so that we can then determine how best to modify them.

This approach is client-centered – it’s all about you and your situation. You,  Ruth and Kathie will work as a team, with the aim of empowering you to become involved in creating your personalized program that will work for you.

Functional Medicine Testing

Functional medicine tests are part of the RESTOREDme program, and can be added to other sessions.  Example tests and prices shown below.

CAPABLEme

CAPABLEme – Cancer Avoidance: Personalize And Balanced Lifestyle Education. 8 week program. $950.

RESTOREDme

RESTOREDme – Recurrence Elimination for Survivors: Terrain Optimization through Rebalancing, Education and Diet. 4 month program. $1950

4. Functional medicine testing

What is functional medicine?

Ruth works with clients using a functional medicine approach. Functional Medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, as well as symptoms management. Instead of conventional medicine which deals with the “what” – what disease, what pill, functional medicine deals with the “why” – why is this symptom occurring now and why has this happened?

This approach addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional Medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, Functional Medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.

What is functional medicine testing?

Functional medicine testing incorporates different tests from those you normally get with your doctor. These include looking at your genes and their polymorphisms, and looking at the function of different systems in the body.

What testing might be appropriate to determine the drivers of cancer?

While there are many different tests we can do, the most commonly used are shown below, along with their cost.  Some of these tests are part of the 4 monthRESTOREDme program, but they can also be added on to individual consultations or the 8 week CAPABLEme program.

  • DUTCH comprehensive hormone test. Looks at stress hormones and sex hormones to identify imbalances. ~$250. Urine test taken at home.  This test gives a really comprehensive view of your hormone levels, including the metabolites (breakdown products) of hormones.  It helps us see what is out of balance and how we can support it.
  • Organic acid test. This test looks at four critical areas of metabolism – gastrointestinal function, energy production, neurotransmitter processing (relating to mood), and organic acid balance – to assess vitamin and mineral cofactor adequacy. ~$299. Urine test taken at home.
  • Spectracell micronutrient panel ~$290. Blood test, needs to be taken at a lab (additional cost for blood draw). This test looks at the functional levels of all your vitamins and minerals and you anti-oxidant capacity.  This is useful to identifying deficiencies.
  • GI effects comprehensive profile. Looks at digestion, nutritional insufficiencies, and the gut microbiome for imbalances and dysbiosis. $550. Stool sample taken at home.  This helps identify any imbalance in the gut microbiota,  looks at inflammation in the gut, the intestinal permeability, and how the gut is functioning.
  • Food sensitivity testing ~$220. Finger prick test taken at home. This test looks at food sensitivities that might be causing inflammation and immune reactions.
  • Genomics testing to identify relevant polymorphisms possibly related to your cancer so that we can support these. $200-300. Saliva test taken at home.  We look at key polymorphisms involved with methylation and detoxification, and others, that can affect cancer risk.  While we can’t change our genes, knowing we have certain polymorphisms means we can optimize their activity through certain nutrients and lifestyle factors.

Can the cost of these tests be covered by my insurance and done through my doctor?

A few doctors will conduct these tests so that their cost is covered by insurance – but it varies greatly between doctors.  We will gladly work with you and try to see if this is a possibility.

5. CAPABLEme

Cancer Avoidance: Personalized And Balanced Lifestyle Education  8-week program

The focus in this personalized 8-week program is on using nutritional and lifestyle approaches to reduce your risk of getting cancer or other chronic diseases in the first place and to help move existing cancer patients into the best situation for their healing and recovery.

The program includes 4 hours with Ruth and 1 1/2 hours with Kathie spread over the 8 weeks. These sessions are arranged as 30, 60 or 90-minute consultations, depending on schedules and what we are covering that week.  Email support is provided throughout this time period.  Handouts, “homework” and a long-term plan are also provided.

This program can be in person (Northern California) or by phone, or by HIPPA compliant video conference (similar to Skype).

Who is this program suitable for?

This program is appropriate for:

  • cancer prevention – it makes a great “gift” to yourself or a family member for a 50th or 60th birthday. This is particularly useful if you are at high risk for cancer.
  • prevention of other chronic diseases, as well as cancer
  • helping cancer patients at any stage, get on track for healing and recovery

What can you cover in these consultations?

This program is personalized to look at your risk factors and to determine those areas that are most appropriate to rebalance, to reduce your risk of cancer.  These same factors are often appropriate to reducing the risk of other chronic illness too.

Prior to your first consultation, you will be asked to complete a detailed (and lengthy!) intake questionnaire and a 3-day food diary. The questionnaire and food diary must be returned at least five days before your first consultation to allow time for their thorough review. The review includes an assessment of any potential nutrient depletion that might occur as a result of medications you are currently taking.

The first consultation with Ruth is for 90 minutes and will comprise a review of your health history, diet, and your risk for cancer/chronic disease. It will focus on your unique situation and circumstances, and your goals.

We will discuss options for some simple at home testing such as height/waist/weight measurement, basal body temperature, urine pH levels, zinc taste test, blood glucose testing (additional cost for monitor ~$25), vitamin D levels (additional cost ~$50), Omega 3 levels (additional cost ~$55), and additional nutrient status tests as required.

The aim of this first session is information gathering, with discussion of some core foundational interventions.

Between the first and second consultations, Ruth will consider your specific situation and goals and prepare an individualized nutrition and lifestyle program to improve your health and well-being, and reduce the risk of cancer occurrence. We will go through this program in depth in the subsequent 2 sessions with Ruth (one 90-minute, plus one 60 minute session), including how to implement this in your life so that the changes are sustainable. We will also review any test results you have and take the time to discuss any additional needs, questions, or concerns.

Examples of the type of topics we can discuss in these sessions include:

  • Blood glucose control and its impact on cancer growth
  • Detoxification of the body
  • Reducing toxic load in everyday living
  • Stress reduction and its importance for cancer and health
  • The hormone puzzle
  • The immune system
  • Healthy eating plan personalized for you, not a one-size-fits-all
  • Appropriate supplementation, given your history and risks
  • Emotional, spiritual, and psychological aspects of health

Optional: functional medicine testing can be included as an extra to this program.

During the three, half hour sessions with Kathie, you will work on how to implement your nutritional plan so that it fits into your lifestyle.

How much does it cost?

The price for the 8-week program including 4 hours with Ruth and 1 1/2 hours with Kathie is $950.

This is payable either, in total up front ($855 – 10% discount) or in 2 weekly installments of $250, $250, $250, and $200.

When your consultation is being scheduled using our online scheduler, you have the option to enter your credit card onto the secure system. We can then use this card for charges after appointments using the plan outlined above. This is shown clearly on the scheduler and accompanying app. If we are meeting in person and you prefer not to use a credit card, we will send an invoice through the scheduler and you can pay by check/cheque.  We appreciate prompt payment within 7 days of your consultation.

How do I sign up for a clinical consultation?

6. RESTOREDme

Recurrence Elimination for Survivors: Terrain Optimization through Rebalancing, Education and Diet. 4 month program.

After you have gone through cancer treatment, it often feels that you are then left on your own  to carry on, without any continued support from the medical system apart from regular follow up scans. The focus of this personalized 4 month program is to give you that support after your treatment as you find your “new normal” and to teach you about how you can optimize your health.

The program includes 9 1/2 hours with Ruth and 2 hours with Kathie spread over the 16 weeks. These sessions are arranged as 30, 60 or 90 minute consultations, depending on schedules and what we are covering that week.  Functional medicine tests are also included in this program at additional cost. Email support is provided throughout this time period.  Handouts, “homework” and a long term plan are also provided.

This approach is client-centered – it’s all about you and your situation. You, Ruth and Kathie will work as a team, with the aim of empowering you to become involved in creating your personalized program that will work for you. This program can be in person (Northern California) or by phone, or by HIPPA compliant video conferencing (similar to Skype).

Who is this program suitable for?

This program is appropriate for those who have finished their cancer treatments and want to be empowered to take action to reduce their risk of a recurrence and optimize their health.

This is a more in depth program than the 8 weeks program and represents a commitment for both you and Ruth. This type of approach isn’t about quick fixes, but rather about making sustainable changes and improvements.

What can you cover in these consultations?

This program provides support and teaches you about many aspects of health, with the goal being to change the “terrain” of your body so that it is more inhospitable to cancer.

An analogy of the terrain is a flower struggling to grow in a garden with lots of weeds. Although we can pull out the weeds to help the flower (i.e., an oncologist removes the cancer [weeds] using surgery, chemo, or radiation)  we also need to work on the soil and environment so those weeds don’t come back. Similarly, we need to make our body an environment where cancer cannot thrive.

We look at what may have been some of the drivers of your cancer or imbalances in the body, and how best to modify them.

The first consultation with Ruth is for 90 minutes and will comprise a review of your health history, including lifetime health risk factors, past and present treatments, diet and exercise, as well as sleep and stress. It will focus on your unique situation and circumstances, and your goals and what is most important to you.

Some simple at home testing will be discussed such as height/waist/weight measurement, basal body temperature, urine pH levels, zinc taste test, blood glucose testing (additional cost for monitor ~$25), vitamin D levels (additional cost ~$50), Omega 3 levels (additional cost ~$55), and additional nutrient status tests as required.

The aim of this first session is information gathering, with discussion of some core foundational interventions.

The second consultation will include discussion of options for functional medicine testing that will help identify the disease drivers for cancer.   This is a key part of the program. Examples of such drivers include:

  • Inflammation
  • stress
  • nutritional deficiencies
  • Genetic polymorphisms
  • Infections and gut dysbiosis (imbalance in the microbes in the gut)
  • our environment including food, lifestyle, toxins, etc
  • hormone imbalances.

Those tests that are most appropriate for you will be selected and conducted at this time, leaving sufficient time for results to be obtained.  We will also review test results you may have received from your physician.

Six additional consultations with Ruth will cover personalized topics appropriate for you, based on your test results, your personal history, and your goals.

Examples of the type of topics we can discuss in these sessions include:

  • blood glucose control and its impact on cancer growth
  • detoxification of the body every day and reducing toxic load
  • reducing inflammation
  • stress reduction and its importance for cancer and health
  • the hormone puzzle
  • the immune system
  • supporting your genes through food, supplementation and lifestyle
  • Healthy eating plan personalized for you, not a one-size-fits-all
  • appropriate supplementation, given your history and risks
  • the importance of exercise and sleep
  • psycho-oncology, exploring the emotional, spiritual, and psychological aspects of health

Together you will create a clear individualized plan to address both short- and long term goals, which include nutritional and lifestyle approaches to improve your health and well-being, and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.  Handouts will be provided for reading, along with “homework”.

During the four, half hour sessions with Kathie, she will help you with any areas of change you are struggling with, such as offering practical advice on food preparation, shopping, etc.

How much does it cost?

The price for the 4 month program including 9 1/2 hours with Ruth and 2 hours with Kathie is $1950.

This is payable either, in total up front ($1755 – 10% discount) or in 7x 2 weekly installments of $250, with a final payment in the last week of $200.

The cost of functional medicine tests is a separate charge, made either directly to the testing facility or via CALMERme.   There is never any mark-up on testing charges.

What clients say

I have known Ruth socially, through our mutual book group, for ten years. But when I was suddenly diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, our relationship expanded to her becoming my compassionate, knowledgable cancer coach. I marveled at her background and up to date information on all aspects of my concerns.

After undergoing a hysterectomy and my series of chemotherapy, she was ready with the diet I needed to implement, to keep up my strength and renew some of the damages caused by the chemo. Nausea remedies, pain relief suggestions, food preparation ideas … She offered so many answers that helped alleviate my fears.

Here I am, three years later, beating the odds! I’m convinced that Ruth’s advice and information are the major reasons I’m enjoying a blessed life today.

P.F. Sonoma, CA.
Ruth is an Angel. She calmly offers research help and suggestions for the best diet and supplements. Her follow-up with lists and thoughts is professional yet warm and caring. She has such a positive outlook, as she ticks off options, that it’s hard to feel hopeless in her presence. Her patience in explaining the baffling world of drugs and treatments helps lift the fog of overwhelm. I’ve been blessed with Ruth’s brilliance and the biggest gift of all, her time.
